Celebrating Janmashtami At Home- Janmashtami Crafts and Activities

As we embrace the vibrant festival of Janmashtami, it’s a wonderful opportunity to introduce children to the rich tapestry of our traditions and culture.

Engaging in creative and educational activities not only brings the stories of Lord Krishna to life but also fosters a sense of community and joy.

From crafting beautiful crowns and matkis and decorative flowers to preparing delicious prasad together, these activities offer a meaningful way for kids to connect with the festival’s essence.

So, gather your little ones and dive into the festivities with enthusiasm and creativity. Through these shared moments of celebration, you’ll not only pass on traditions but also instill a sense of pride and belonging in their hearts.

Wishing you and your family a joyful and meaningful Janmashtami filled with laughter, learning, and love!

1. Have fun together with Music and Songs

A fun part of celebrating this festival is listening to and dancing to the tunes of fun songs about Krishna. There are so many songs about Krishna and Radha, and about Krishna’s naughtiness and the love he shared with his mother, Yashoda, that kids will love to sing and dance along to.

The beautiful song from the movie Lagaan is about Krishna and Radha and their ever-enduring love.

We ended up watching the movie Lagaan yet again after listening to this song, which veered into conversations about India’s freedom struggle and Independence Day.

2. Bhajans and Classical Renditions

There are also several bhajans and classical renditions of Krishna that are extremely soulful. I am linking some of the most beloved songs in our house below for you to share and enjoy with your friends and family this Janmashtami.

3. Books on Krishna and Janmashtami

Krishna Janmashtami books

We love reading books in our house, and I am always scurrying to find new books.

Books, especially picture books, are a great way to introduce children to reading as they use their imagination in their unique ways to absorb the text and colorful illustrations.

Share the delightful stories of Krishna’s childhood at bedtime, highlighting his playful antics and divine deeds.

This not only entertains but also instills a love for the cultural heritage.

Explore books that narrate Krishna’s life and the traditions associated with Janmashtami. Reading together can spark curiosity and deeper understanding.

4. Participating in Janmashtami Pooja Preparations

Involve them in decorating the pooja space, making garlands, or preparing prasad. This helps them feel connected to the rituals and traditions.

5. Janmashtami Arts and Crafts

Janmashtami can be made even more special with fun and engaging craft activities for children.

One delightful activity is creating a “Matki Decoration.” Children can decorate small, earthen pots (matkis) using paints, sequins, and colorful ribbons.

These decorated matkis can be used as centerpieces or hung around the house to add a festive touch.

You can either buy these matkis from Amazon, Michaels, or Walmart and decorate them to your liking, or make your matki using clay.

We like to use Model Magic or terra cotta clay to make our matkis and then decorate them with paint and rhinestones.

6. Making Janmashtami Peacock Feather Crowns

Another engaging craft is making “Peacock Feather Crowns.” Lord Krishna is often depicted wearing a crown adorned with peacock feathers.

Children can create their crowns using construction paper, colored feathers, glitter, and glue.

We used a template to make our crowns. Since I printed them on white paper, we ended up coloring them as well.

7. Flower Garland/ Paper Flower Garland

This is another activity that children, especially older kids, can enjoy. You can make a small garland for wearing on the wrists or a bigger one for the neck.

Supplies needed: Flowers (real or fake), a thread, and a needle. To make the activity kid-friendly, use a thick thread or yarn and a plastic needle.

We made our flower garland using the needle and thread from our Quick Stitch kit that we got from India. It is also a great way to develop their fine motor and sewing skills.

8. Create Janmashtami Photo Frames
